by Ruth Beechick
This booklet is one of three components of The Three R's Set, which is a group of books sold together as a unit along with a double-sided chart (phonics and math). The ISBN for The Three R's Set is: 0940319063.
This booklet gives the same common sense advice found in her other books: You Can Teach Your Child Successfully, A Strong Start in Language, and A Home Start in Reading.
An Easy Start in Arithmetic discusses the modes of thinking, such as, the manipulative mode, the mental image mode, and the abstract mode. Then she tells us how to use the modes. Math around the home in the preschool years is then covered, with plenty of practical ideas given. What I appreciate about Ruth Beechick's approach is that she's not interested in pushing a young child. Ruth Beechick tells us what a first grade mathematics curriculum should include and gives us teaching suggestions so that we can accomplish this at home. There are chapters for second and third grades also.
It's a small, little book, but it's filled with knowledge from Ruth Beechick's years as a teacher and homeschool advocate. I recommend it for anyone with a child in grades Preschool - 1 or possibly 2.
